This Dream - For My Father
I woke one day to find you there
You were real because I believed
But I never embraced the love inside
Never thinking you would leave
I arose from bed to face the day
With everything that you supplied
Wandering thoughts to lead the way
Expectance never left my side
Strength, I found, deep within
So much pride, and all from you
But they rejected me outright
And you were there when I withdrew
You helped me when I hurt the most
You'll always be the one I love
And when I fell asleep that night
You were all I was thinking of
And as I closed my eyes to sleep
You were such a part of me
But as my mind began to dream
You were no wer
Standing in the void I perspire,
Holding in my outstretched hands an intangible concept.
What could it be?
It looks like it should be so familiar to me, but I see
No correlation between this thing and memory.
Shall I experiment?
I speak a word in no known language,
Hate arrives in reply, toward the sky.
Ears keen, I then ask "why?"
Pixels reach out to enter my eyes.
Shock in blankets deafens me,
While circuits redefine what's "free,"
And Stars and Stripes pulls off its mask
To show its bloody, tyrant past.
Before me lay the moster, screaming and gnashing,
And in dismay I close my eyes.
With confidence I reawake,
And in my han
Black and white, so static
So captivating, this new escape
So entrancing, we cannot turn away
Like a tractor-beam, feeding on minds
Complicated, these nursery rhymes
Flickering box, a happy sabotage
Stories and lies for a new generation
Laugh at the picture box
Laugh, laugh with full attention
Let soak in the Gospel of Pop Culture
Now in color, a new definition of love
Our puppets insult the audience
And go back to life off-stage
We live, we buy, we watch
We grieve, we cry, we watch
We laugh at lies, we watch
Let Hollywood teach the lust
Such a relief to know what we trust(ed?)
The path you walk will someday split
Today is but tomorrows writ
Ink and paper fade away
Unlike our choices yesterday
Time, it seems, the problem was
And you would hesitate because
The endless possibilities
Would always end with stormy seas
Alas, the waves behind you crash
The turbulence has turned to ash
And choices new bring revelation
To the pasts young domination
Take the path you know less chosen
Free the fear and leave it frozen
Light the torch and make your choice
The reason you possess your voice
